The Role: 

Reporting to the Head of Residence, the Residence Counsellor – Overnight plays an essential role in supporting the safety, wellbeing, and personal development of boarding students living on campus. Working closely with Residence leadership and fellow counsellors, you will help create a positive and inclusive residential community where students feel supported, respected, and empowered to thrive both personally and academically. This role is ideal for someone who is adaptable and passionate about working with youth. Every day brings new opportunities to mentor students, build meaningful relationships, and make a lasting impact during an important stage of their development. 

Start Date: September 1, 2026 

Shift: Rotating Sunday-Friday overnight shifts (4:30 p.m. – 9:00 a.m.)

What You’ll Do: 

  • Support Student Wellbeing: Build trusting relationships with students by providing emotional support, guidance, and mentorship while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries 

  • Ensure Student Safety: Supervise students within Residence and during activities, ensuring their safety, wellbeing, and adherence to Residence expectations 

  • Support Daily Living: Support students with their daily routines, including meals, appointments, activities, and evening and morning routines as required. 

  • Promote Healthy Development: Encourage positive social interactions, healthy decision-making, independence, and conflict resolution while fostering an inclusive community 

  • Administer Student Care: Dispense medications and vitamins in accordance with NBS policies and maintain accurate documentation and student records 

  • Respond to Emergencies: Respond promptly and professionally to emergencies, accidents, illnesses, or behavioural concerns, completing required incident documentation 

  • Collaborate with the Residence Team: Work closely with Residence leadership, counsellors, parents, medical professionals, faculty, and other departments to support student success  

  • Maintain Professional Standards: Exercise sound judgement, discretion, and confidentiality while contributing to a respectful and positive living environment 

What You Bring:

  • Diploma or degree in Child and Youth Care, Social Work, Child Studies, Psychology, Sociology, or a related field  

  • Two or more years of experience working directly with children and youth (approximately ages 10-19)  

  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification  

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills  

  • Excellent judgement, problem-solving, and conflict resolution abilities  

  • Ability to remain calm and respond effectively in emergency situations  

  • High level of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality  

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail  

  • Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively within a fast-paced environment  

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Google Workspace  

  • Ability to accompany students using public transportation when required 

Compensation: $45,000 annually, aligned with internal equity
