The Role:
Under the leadership of the Chef de Cuisine, the Kitchen Assistant will provide assistance to the Chef and Cooks as required by clearing and cleaning dishes, helping with food preparation and service, and helping the children and staff as required. 


Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with kitchen production and food preparation activities as they relate to the service of meals, salads, snacks, catering and responding to special/restricted dietary requirements
  • Prepare sandwiches, salads and grab + go items for the café
  • Assist with receiving and putting away of deliveries and cleaning activities
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned to contribute to the team effort and achieve the objectives of the Food Services Department
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment by keeping the work area and the kitchen clean, sanitized, and tidy, putting excess food away and clearing away waste, and by following instructions regarding cleanliness and sanitation
  • Assemble food portions for breakfast, lunch, and or dinner (i.e. cereal, juice, fruit, bowls, sugar, crackers). Prepare the salad bar for lunch and dinner
  • Serve patrons of Mona Campbell Square Café and/or Currie Hall by communicating daily fare and dishing out portions as per established guidelines
  • Adherence to all School, HACCP, and municipal food handling policies, standards and guidelines in the course of food preparation and handling of food and leftovers
  • All other duties as assigned

Skills and Qualifications:
  • Experience in a Food Services role in a professional/institutional kitchen
  • Knowledge of food services practices and procedures; valid Food Handlers Certificate is required, Smart Serve is an asset
  • Good understanding of sanitation and cleanliness issues including knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Able to work in a fast paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Comfortable working with school aged children
  • Must have availability on weekends

Compensation

Salary: $34,000 annually
